It is one of the world's best gardens a must see for lovers of nature. A sylvan paradise, it houses some of the most exotic plants of the world.

Founded way back in 1846, these historic gardens sprawl over a massive 38 hectares of land close to the Yarra river. They comprise a collection of a great diversity of plants from around the world selected on an educational, scientific, research, horticultural and aesthetic basis.

The gardens are also home to the National Herbarium of Victoria, which has more than a million preserved plant specimens used for plant classification, identification and conservation. There are tearooms, cafes and reception centre rooms within the grounds of the gardens.

Today, the Gardens are home to more than 51,000 individual plants, representing over 12,000 different species, and have become a natural sanctuary for native wild life.

The gardens are open every day of the year, but times change with the seasons. From November through till March, they are open from 7.30am to 8.30pm. From April until October, the hours are 7.30am to 5.30pm.
