Australia’s Annual Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne cup, also called as “The Race that stops a nation”, is one of the most sought events in Australia. It is a competition where horses aged three years old and above would gallop at around 3,200 meters in distance. This event is normally held at the Flemington Racecourse in Victoria Racing Club, Melbourne. This activity is usually held on the first Tuesday of November.

Melbourne Cup’s History

The earliest Melbourne Cup took place in the year 1861 where only 17 horses competed against each other while around 4,000 spectators waited to see who would be the winner. At that time, the price was £170 and a watch made of gold. Winning is not only at stake here but also being able to finish the race is one. Because of the long distances that the horses should travel, not all are fortunate to be able to finish the race.
